Ex-Trojan Posey named ACC Player of Year

  • Former Lee County and current Florida State University baseball star Buster Posey wins the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Player of the Year award on Monday.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —Florida State, the second seed in this week’s ACC Baseball Championship, placed a combined five student-athletes on this year’s All-ACC first and second teams Monday, highlighted by asecond Player of the Year honor to former Lee County High School star player Buster Posey as voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches.

In what has been an outstanding season thus far for the junior catcher, Posey currently leads the league in seven statistical categories and is ranked in the Top 10 in four others. The Leesburg native leads the ACC in batting average (.471), hits (96), runs scored (75), runs batted in (68), total bases (175), on-base percentage (.571) and slugging percentage (.858).

In addition, Posey is second in home runs (17), tied for fourth in doubles (20), tied for fifth in triples (4) and sixth in walks (45).He was just as impressive in league play as the right hander batted .479 in 30 games in leading the Seminoles to a 24-6 ACC record.

Posey has also had a stellar season on the defensive end posting a .982 fielding percentage with 51 starts behind the plate. He is throwing out 41.7 percent of would be base

stealers on the year while registering six pick offs. The right hander has also made eight appearances on the mound and is a perfect 6-for-6 in save opportunities. Posey has struck out 10 batters and has not allowed a run in 7.1 innings of work.

Florida State will open the ACC Baseball Tournament on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against Wake Forest.
