Roscoe proves ‘Golden’ in victory

  • Albany’s Terry Roscoe wins his first open-division middleweight Goden Gloves crown and advances to regionals this weekend.

STONE MOUNTAIN — Terry Roscoe has felt it was his time.

The 18-year-old Albany boxer grew even more certain of that after winning the Golden Gloves state middleweight crown Sunday, scoring a unanimous decision against Jonathan Jonathan Houser. It was his first Golden Gloves title since he began competing in the open division (ages 17-34).

“It’s definitely my time now,” Roscoe said Sunday after the fight. “Thank God for it. Without him, none of this would be possible.”

Roscoe now advances to Golden Gloves Regionals held this weekend in Chattanooga, Tenn. He said he is meeting the team on Wednesday and then making the trip.

Roscoe, who also defeated Alvin Sheets in Saturday’s semifinal in a unanimous decision, found himself fighting similar bouts. Thanks to a greater dedication to his training regimen, he was able to slug it out instead of going for the technical points.

“It was just a war,” said Roscoe, who originally is from Augusta and has lived in Albany for three years. “I had more stamina. I brought it hard to them during every round.”

Now that Roscoe is going to regionals, he once again has a chance to reach nationals and earn a USA Boxing ranking.

At the last regional, held last month in Augusta, he lost in the final via split decision against Lamar Russ. Roscoe, however, had defeated Russ while they were junior competitors.

During last month’s regional, however, Roscoe admitted not being as aggressive during the final two rounds, and that proved to be his downfall as Russ advanced.

This time, if the two boxers meet again, Roscoe has different plans.

“If I put more pressure on him, I guarantee I will get him out of there,” Roscoe said Thursday.
