Rare loss for Lady Rams

  • While the Albany State women’s basketball team has had it share of woes on the road this season, they had been nearly perfect at home until losing its second game of the year in Albany Thursday night, this time to Stillman College, 57-45.

ALBANY — So much for home court advantage.

On Thursday night, the Stillman Lady Tigers handed the Albany State Lady Rams their second home loss of the season, beating them down by 12 points in front of a home crowd, 57-45.

Junior forward Nikia Trice dropped in a team-high 15 points for the Lady Rams, and although the loss dropped ASU’s overall record to 11-9, their SIAC record remains strong at 9-5.

The Lady Tigers, meanwhile, improved their overall record to 7-11 and stand at a 5-6 in the SIAC.

The score was close at halftime with the Lady Tigers holding a two-point advantage, 20-18, but it wasn’t pretty after that.

In the second half, the Lady Rams not only struggled to get the ball in the basket, but as a team, they shot a disappointing 32 percent from the field to go along with 30 percent three-point shooting and a 40 percent clip from the free-throw line.

And the Lady Tigers certainly capitalized, going on a second-half scoring burst that would break the game wide open midway through the second half.

Lady Tigers senior forward Bianca Burton had a double-double, including a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, while center Tiffany McGhee also recorded a double-double for Stillman with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Sylbrena Johnson added 18 points and came away with three steals for the Lady Tigers.

As for ASU’s offense, La’Toya Coard, who went 5-15 from the floor, scored 12 points in the losing effort.

But the news was not all bad for Albany State on Thursday.

Earlier in the night, the ASU men bounced back from their loss to Clark Atlanta University earlier this week to hold off Stillman and win, 49-44.

Scheraun King was the only player to reach double digits for the Rams with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The win pushes Albany State’s overall record one game above .500 at 10-9, while their SIAC record now sits at 8-7.

Stillman (1-16), meanwhile, has lost six games in a row. The Tigers shot poorly from the field at 29 percent, which added to their long night in Albany.

Forward Kenard Johnson put in 15 points off the Stillman bench and guard Preston Cheatham chipped in with 12 points and three steals.
