B-P serves up scholarship for Gilmer

  • Sherwood Christian Academy volleyball captain Katie Gilmer signs with NAIA school Brewton-Parker College.

ALBANY — Katie Gilmer got more than she bargained for when she tried out for Brewton-Parker College’s volleyball team.

The NAIA school offered the Sherwood Christian Academy senior a scholarship before she returned home.

And that’s what left her speaking before an audience, a feat she admits to her is “nerve wracking.” Nonetheless, she will continue to at least play volleyball in front of crowds.

“It’s all good,” she said.

Gilmer’s fascination with volleyball began when friends convinced her to play, and once she built a close bond with Lady Eagles’ coach, Lisa O’Connor, she began learning the finer points of volleyball.

During Gilmer’s senior year, she was captain and averaged three digs at the libero position. She who played on an all-star team during the summer.

“She’s a hard worker with a great desire to play on the next level,” O’Connor said. “She’s worked really hard to make it to that next level and I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Gilmer, who also plays in Sherwood Christian’s soccer team, also likes other things about the sport of volleyball.

“I like the atmosphere and energy that the sport has,” Gilmer said. “It doesn’t take just athletic ability, it also takes a strong mental player to succeed on the court.”
