Symphony gives ‘Classical Valentine’

  • Romantic compositions will be the highlight of tonight’s Albany Symphony Orchestra concert.

ALBANY — In honor of Valentine’s Day, the Albany Symphony Orchestra will present “A Classical Valentine” today.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Albany Municipal Auditorium. It will be preceded by a free 6 p.m. reception at Jim’s Piano & Organ Galleries.

Concert tickets are $22-$30, depending on seat location. Student admission is $5.

The event will feature violinist Kathleen Winkler and double bassist Timothy Pitts performing Giovanni Bottesini’s “Grand Duo Concertante.”

Winkler has previously been featured with the Detroit Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Symphony, the Savannah Symphony and the Phoenix Symphony.

Pitts has previously served as principal bass player and appeared as soloist with the Houston Symphony. He has also performed as soloist with the Savannah Symphony, the Bay Chamber Concerts, Mainly Mozart and Pacific Music Festivals.

In addition to performances by Pitts and Winkler, tonight’s program will include Richard Strauss’ “Don Juan.”

“Strauss Drew upon ‘Don Juan,’ an epic dramatic poem about this legendary lover by Nikolaus Lenau as inspiration,” states a recent symphony news release.

The final composition of the evening will be B{’e}la Bartok’s mid-20th century piece “Concerto for Orchestra.”
