S.C. guitarist blends music and literature

  • A language professor and guitarist will perform a free recital at Darton College today.

ALBANY — Classically trained guitarist Jhon Akers will give a free community lecture and recital at noon today in the Darton Theater, 2400 Gillionville Road.

Akers, a professor of modern languages at Wofford College in South Carolina will present music and information on Carl Sandburg’s love of the Spanish classical guitar.

Akers’ program will include anecdotes, quotes, recitings and dramatization along with playing the guitar.

He has done extensive research on the relationship between Sandburg and Andres Segovia and has performed at Sandburg’s home, a national historic site, in Flat Rock, N.C.

Darton music department director Jeff Kluball said a faculty member suggested Akers as a guest speaker.

“Someone heard his presentation a year or so ago that was on our faculty and said it was a really good presentation for someone in literature and music,” he said.

Kluball said since the two subjects coincide with each other so much, it will make a good experience for those who study either.

“Literature and music are very closely related,” he said. “It will be good for the community and for our English students and our music students. It’s not a lecture or a performance, it’s a mixture of both.”

Light refreshments will be served afterward for those who want to speak with Akers. For more information, call (229) 317-6554.
