Grant indicted

  • An NFL star and eight others have been charged in connection with a February incident in which a woman and her fetus were killed, documents show.

BLAKELY — A grand jury has indicted New Orleans Saints defensive end and former University of Georgia standout Charles Grant along with eight others in connection with the shooting death of a 23-year-old woman and her unborn child outside of a Blakely nightclub, court documents show.

Attempts to contact the New Orleans Saints officials by phone and e-mail for comment Tuesday were unsuccessful.

According to an indictment handed down Tuesday afternoon, Grant has been charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and affray stemming from a fight that ended with the death of 23-year-old Korynda Reed and her unborn child on Feb. 3.

Indicted with Grant were Laquient Macklin, Woodrow Gray, Marshae Stromer, Jarvis Tinson, Anthony Williams, Rodreaco “Rico” Gray, Derrick Bush and Rakevion “Yam” Harris, court documents state.

According to the indictment, prosecutors believe Grant, Macklin and Stromer got into a fight with Williams, Tinson, Rico Gray and Woodrow Gray at a nightclub on North Church Street in Blakely.

Macklin, who was charged with felony murder, feticide, aggravated assault, involuntary manslaughter and affray, is believed to have been the person who shot and killed Reed and her child with a handgun, according to the indictment.

Woodrow Gray was charged with aggravated assault for stabbing Grant in the neck.

Woodrow Gray, Stromer, Williams, Tinson and Rodreaco Gray were each charged with a count of involuntary manslaughter and a count of affray.

Sheriff Jimmy Murkerson couldn’t be reached for comment, but his chief investigator, Will Caudill, had said earlier that the fight appeared to have started inside a nightclub before spilling out into the street.

Grant was taken to a Blakely hospital where he was treated and released.

Bush was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a weapon to a public gathering, while Harris was charged with discharging a firearm near a street.

There was no word Tuesday on when the nine were expected to be processed pending bond hearings, although all were expected to surrender after their lawyers had been contacted, court officials said.

A conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter could result in a sentence of 1-10 years in prison.
