Dougherty jailer is arrested

  • A woman told police a Dougherty County jail employee pointed a gun at her.

ALBANY — A Dougherty County Jail employee has been suspended after police say she pointed a gun at a woman during an argument Monday, police reports show.

Contausha Mitchell, 29, of Albany was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. She bonded out of the Dougherty County Jail Tuesday, jail officials said.

“She has been suspended pending the outcome of her case,” Lt. Keith Kiger, spokesperson for the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office said.

Kiger said that Mitchell had been suspended without pay.

According to police reports, Mitchell pointed a silver- colored handgun at Tyguanna Saunders, who was helping Mitchell’s mother move out of her home, during an argument.

Saunders told police that she was helping Mitchell’s mother move when Mitchell drove up and started yelling profanities at her. Saunders said that Mitchell accused her of using roots and pulled out a gun and started waving it in her direction, the report states.

Police made contact with Mitchell, who said that she and Saunders had been involved in an argument earlier that day, but denied ever pointing the gun at Saunders and said that she never threatened her.

Mitchell did tell police that she owned a silver-colored .22 caliber pistol, but that she didn’t carry it with her to the argument.
