9-year-old charged in pencil stabbing

  • A 9-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated assault after a classmate said he stabbed him in the head with a pencil.

ALBANY —An Albany 9-year-old received minor injuries after being stabbed in the head with a pencil by a classmate, who was angry that he was being made fun of by his peers for losing an earlier fight, police records show.

The victim, identified in police reports only as a 9-year-old Live Oak Elementary student, received a minor puncture wound to the area just behind his left ear after another student stabbed him with a pencil while they were exiting a school bus Monday, according to the report.

The suspect, who was only identified by police as a 9-year-old Live Oak Elementary student, was taken to the Law Enforcement Center along with his 16-year-old brother, the report says.

The suspect was charged with aggravated assault and released to the custody of his parents, Albany Police Department Spokesperson Phylis Banks said.

The suspect's identity was being withheld by police because of his age.

According to the report, the mother of the victim said that Monday's attack may have been provoked after her son won a fight between the two boys Sunday afternoon.

Monday, according to the mother, the suspect was ridiculed by his peers for losing the fight, which provoked the stabbing attack, the report says.

The victim was pushed by the suspect off the bus and was attacked from behind, where he was stabbed in the head with a pencil, according to the police report.

The mother treated the injury and called police because she was worried that "it could be a knife next time," the report says.

According to police documents, police made contact with the suspect and attempted to locate the pencil, but were unsuccessful.
