The Zone

Kids back in school

  • Officials warn motorists to be careful as area schools resume for the spring semester this week.

ALBANY — Motorists should be extra careful on the streets this week as public schools resume classes, officials say.

Lee County and Worth County schools return from their Christmas holidays Monday and Dougherty County schools resume Tuesday, representatives from the three county school systems said Friday.

Lee County School Superintendent Larry Walters said motorists should be aware of the school speed zones in the county as school resumes.

“It’s just that school’s going to be back in session and they need to be safety conscious all the time,” he said.

Lee County school speed zones are from 2:30 p.m.-4 p.m. Dougherty County school speed zones are from 3 p.m.-4 p.m. Worth County school zones are from 3:15 p.m.-3:45 p.m.

All three counties enforce the school speed zones from 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m.

The school zones are not enforced when school is not in session, so motorists should beware of the schools’ resumption, Walters said.

“The important thing is that they will be enforced Monday,” he said. “All the school zones will be monitored Monday and they will be enforced.”

Classes will resume on their regular schedules, so students will need to bring all their school supplies and books with them, officials said.
