ABAC student charged with vehicular homicide

TIFTON — A man who was struck by a vehicle while driving through the ABAC campus on a golf cart has died, officials said.

Jack Larry, a custodial supervisor with Sodexho — a company contracted through the university to provide maintenance duties — died Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, police officials said.

Larry was critically injured in a Nov. 27 incident in which the golf cart he was driving was struck head-on by Holly Ann Pruitt, an ABAC student who police say was headed to class.

Tifton Police Department Officer Sgt. Jody Abad said Wednesday that warrants have been taken out against Pruitt and that her family is expected to bring her to Tifton Saturday to surrender to police.

“We’ve taken out warrants against her for driving on the wrong side of the road and 2nd degree vehicular homicide, which is a misdemeanor,” Abad said.

Abad said that Pruitt had told police that she was driving to class on Stallion Drive around 8 a.m. Nov. 27 when she struck Larry. She told police that her windshield had fogged up and that she wasn’t sure what she had hit until she got out of her Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Larry was thrown from the golf cart and landed several feet away, Abad said.

ABAC officials said Thursday that Larry’s funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Gressette Gymnasium on ABAC’s campus.

The school has formed the Jack Larry Memorial Fund through the university’s alumni Foundation, ABAC Public Relations Director Mike Chason said.

“Jack was much loved by the campus community for his easy smile and dedication to his job,” Chason said. “He will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Please keep Jack’s wife and family in your thoughts and prayers. This is also a time for the ABAC Family to come together and support each other.”

Larry had been employed at ABAC since Jan. 12, 1987, Chason said.
