D-W fans asked to donate food

ALBANY — Deerfield-Windsor fans coming to Friday night’s football game are being asked to bring more than their school spirit with them — bring a can of food also.

Wendy Mathis, parent of a student at DWS, said the school is conducting a food drive for the local Food Bank at each home football game this season.

“If we begin collecting food now, just think what we can do,” Mathis said. “We must remember that hunger affects people all year long, not just at Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

Mathis said any food items are needed with the exception of fresh, frozen or glass items. The volunteers will be accepting fruits, vegetables, soups, can meats and fish, boxes of pasta, rice and other non perishable items.

Also, personal hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes and baby diapers are welcomed.

Mathis said the lower school and the upper school are competing to see which campus can bring in the most cans of food during homecoming week. She said Deerfield is encouraging other schools to do the same thing and become involved in a food drive.
